Week 25: What is an Internet search?

DID YOU KNOW?:
When you are searching on the Internet, you can use some great tools for narrowing down your search results.  For example, when you put a topic into Google, you are given a number of "hits" as results.  "Hits" stands for the number of pages that have that keyword on the Internet.  No one wants to read all of the millions of pages returned, so use these great facts when searching on the Internet to narrow down your search results:

  • If you are researching something that has two words but acts as one item, put quotations around the word.
    • Examples:  "Golden Retriever" or "Candy Cane"
    • If you don't do this, your Search Engine will bring all of the pages on the internet that have the word "Golden" and all the pages that have the word "Retriever".  If you put quotation marks (or parenthesis), you are telling your Search Engine to only look for these two words together on the Internet.
  • You can add a '+' sign to tell your Search Engine to look for pages that have an item plus an item to guarantee a more specified search.
    • Examples:  If you would like to research what your pet hedgehog may eat, you could type 'hedgehog + food'.
    • If you would like to research your favorite video game and console, try searching "Just Dance 3" + xbox360
  • You can even try adding in a '-' sign to get rid of certain pages in your search.
    • Examples:  If you already know that koalas eat plants, but you are wanting to see what else they eat, try searching 'koalas + food - plants'
